Hartly, Delaware (September 2, 2017) – A man was killed and his wife seriously injured after his horse drawn carriage collided with a vehicle on Thursday in Kent County, according to the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

The crash took place at about 8:05 p.m. August 31 on Halltown Road, also called SR 8, at the intersection of Royal Farms and Hartly Road also known as SR 44.

A man identified as Ervin D. Miller, 55, of Hartly was operating a horse drawn carriage westbound on Halltown Road trying to make a left turn into a Royal Farms Store at the intersection. A dark, older-style passenger car traveling eastbound on SR 8 collided with the buggy throwing Miller and his wife, 55, into the roadway.

The car then continued eastbound on SR8 and may have possibly turned northbound onto Pearsons Corner Road, as per state police.

Miller was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he later died. His wife was also hospitalized at the same hospital and was admitted in critical condition.

SR8 in the area of the accident was closed for about 3 and half hours for the clearance of the scene and to allow an investigation.

The horse detached itself from the carriage and ran from the crash site and was later found at the residence of the victims. It is not clear if the horse was injured.

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
